When you were growing up did kids in your class carry an EpiPen? Was your school peanut free? I can tell you mine wasn’t – I ate PB&J sandwiches regularly. And gluten-free products were only available at specialty stores in big cities like Toronto. Sometimes it feels like allergies and intolerances have exploded overnight. Today it’s common to see gluten-free, lactose-free, soy-free, and peanut-free in a variety of restaurants and grocery stores. Last week’s article went into detail about the differences between allergies and intolerances in this post. Now that you have a little more insight into if you may have an allergy or intolerance, you may be wondering why food allergies in North America have more than tripled in the last twenty years? Well after looking at the research, there is no clean cut answer to why allergies have skyrocketed. However, there is a really cool documentary that highlights some of the theories currently being explored along with cutting edge treatments.

“The Nature of Things –Allergy Fix”, is a documentary by the one and only David Suzuki. He travels across North America and all the way to the UK and Germany to investigate why allergies are on the rise –and what’s being done about it. In this documentary, David Suzuki interviews experts who are investigating the effects of sunlight, farm life, eczema, pasteurized milk, the dust in our environment, and how the bacteria in our gut could be causing allergies. I know you’re as excited as I am about this one! One researcher is even exploring how worms might help solve food allergies.

If you have a chance, check it out, it’s pretty informative for those of trying to figure out our digestive symptoms, allergies and food intolerances.

Much Love and Good Eating,
